Nicholas Maloney is a sound artist, composer, and performer from Jackson, Mississippi currently based in Nashville, Tennessee. Nicholas creates personal, evocative recordings, while at the same time offering a pallet of sound that can be used to practice the rewarding act of deep listening. They look to challenge listeners’ focus and perception of sound. Their work shifts delicately from the limits of human perception to the most powerful sonic intensity, exploring the experiential nature of sound within a framework of progressing and evolving compositions. They are interested in the interaction among texture, sound, space. Among microcosm and macrocosm.
Under his full name, Nicholas Maloney creates compositions using environmental recordings, found sounds, electronics, traditional instruments, objects, and a variety of processing and audio transformation techniques, creating works that challenge traditional forms of arrangement and encourage deep listening.
They also record under the moniker Blanket Swimming, translating personal experiences dealing with presence into subtle musical expressions. These pieces often unfold at a glacial pace, employing delicate drones, tension, and calm control.
Other projects include Thar Desert, Sleep Silver Lightning, The Stars Are Weeping (with Stephen Callahan), Knowth (with Andy Klingensmith), S'entendre (with Jonathan Deasy), NEPTR (with Nick Kreis and Cole Beaune), Junkyard Priest (inactive), The Empty Handed Painters (inactive), and The Villetown Mountain Army Brigade (inactive).
