Nicholas Maloney is a sound artist, field recordist, composer, and performer from Jackson, Mississippi. Nicholas creates personal, evocative recordings, while at the same time offering a pallet of sound that can be used to practice the rewarding act of deep listening. He looks to challenge the listeners’ focus and perception of sound. His work shifts delicately from the limits of human perception to the most powerful sonic intensity, exploring the experiential nature of sound within a framework of progressing and evolving compositions. He is interested in the interaction among texture, sound, space. Among microcosm and macrocosm.
Under his full name, Nicholas Maloney creates compositions using environmental recordings, found sounds, electronics, traditional instruments, objects, and a variety of processing and audio transformation techniques, creating works that challenge traditional forms of arrangement and encourage deep listening.
He also records under the moniker Blanket Swimming, translating personal experiences dealing with presence into subtle musical expressions. These pieces often unfold at a glacial pace, employing delicate drones, tension, and calm control.
Other projects include Thar Desert, Sleep Silver Lightning, The Stars Are Weeping (with Stephen Callahan), Knowth (with Andy Klingensmith), S'entendre (with Jonathan Deasy), NEPTR (with Nick Kreis and Cole Beaune), Junkyard Priest (inactive), The Empty Handed Painters (inactive), and The Villetown Mountain Army Brigade (inactive).
Maloney curates the labels Warm Milk Recordings, Asonu, and his self-publishing banner, Open Colour Imprint.
