Nicholas Maloney is a sound artist, field recordist, multi-instrumentalist, performer, and recording engineer from Jackson, Mississippi currently living in Cork, Ireland. He earned his bachelor's degree in Recording Industry Production from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2017. Nicholas creates personal, evocative recordings, while at the same time offering a pallet of sound that can be used to practice the rewarding act of deep listening. He looks to challenge the listeners’ focus and perception of sound. His work shifts delicately from the limits of human perception to the most powerful sonic intensity, exploring the textural nature of sound within a framework of progressing and evolving compositions. He is interested in the interaction among texture, sound, space. Among microcosm and macrocosm.
Under his full name, Nicholas Maloney creates compositions using field recordings, found sounds, electronics, and a variety of processing and audio transformation techniques, creating works that challenge traditional forms of arrangement and encourage deep listening.
He also records under the moniker, Blanket Swimming, which similarly engages via deep listening but translates personal experiences dealing with spirituality, human emotion, and presence into subtle musical expressions. These pieces often unfold at a glacial pace, employing delicate drones which are almost like gentle waves with melodic tones that shift with tension and calm control. Extended repeating motifs and the use of cyclical, longing, melodies sometimes double with airy vocals, washed out guitars, and environmental recordings to create a sense of dreamlike nostalgia. Blanket Swimming has the rare talent of straddling both melancholy drones and uplifting melodies, striking lasting emotional impression by exercising the construction/destruction of stereo drones with found sounds and often ethereal vocals.
Maloney also records under the name Sleep Silver Lightning, exploring compositions for the guitar and voice.
In 2015, Nicholas Maloney co-founded the netlabel, Warm Milk Recordings with Whitson Ramsey.
