Nicholas Maloney is a sound artist currently based in Nashville, Tennessee. He holds a MA in Experimental Sound Practice from University College Cork, Ireland and a BA in Recording Production from the University of Southern Mississippi.

Nicholas creates personal, evocative recordings that offer a space that can be used to practice the rewarding act of deep listening. He looks to challenge listeners’ focus and perception of sound while exploring the experiential nature of sound within the context of composition. He is interested in the interaction among texture, sound, space, microcosm and macrocosm.

Since 2015, he has recorded ambient music under the moniker Blanket Swimming, focusing on spontaneity, fluidity, texture, and presence.

Under his full name, Nicholas Maloney composes using environmental recordings, found sounds, electronics, traditional instruments, objects, and a variety of processing and audio transformation techniques. These sound pieces serve as a way to share experiences of listening to/interacting with an environment through the lens of various recording methods while simultaneously communicating a new, abstract sonic narrative.

Other projects include Thar Desert, Sleep Silver Lightning, The Stars Are Weeping (with Stephen Callahan), Knowth (with Andy Klingensmith), S'entendre (with Jonathan Deasy), NEPTR (with Nick Kreis and Cole Beaune), Junkyard Priest (inactive), The Empty Handed Painters (inactive), and The Villetown Mountain Army Brigade (inactive).

Maloney curates the labels Asonu, Warm Milk Recordings, and operates his self-publishing banner, Open Colour Imprint.
